French language placement test

Information Box Group

Welcome to the Department of French at McMaster University. The transition from High School to University can be a challenge for students whose background experience in French language learning is often quite diverse. The Department of French at McMaster University encourages all students to strive to become bilingual and pursue their French language education taking it up at a level appropriate to their competencies. The starting point of the process may be different: beginner (French 1Z06), intermediate (French 2Z06), or advanced (French 1A06/2M06). With this in mind, some students may feel either under-prepared or over-prepared for their first French course at McMaster assigned by the University based on high school pre-requisites or other factors pertaining to the students’ knowledge and competencies in French. For those who feel uncertain, a placement test (evaluating oral and written comprehension, as well as grammar and vocabulary) can be taken online to help faculty and students better select the most appropriate course. There is no charge for this test.

Adapting the starting point to the actual skills is essential to the ultimate success of learning a language and therefore well worth the possible reassignment.

Note: Ev@lang does not replace DELF-DALF examinations, the TCF (Test de connaissance du français) or TEF (Test d’évaluation de français).
