Being bilingual is of great value

Welcome to the Department of French at McMaster University. Built on the principle of “Francophonie et diversité,” the Department offers a range of programs that help our students reach their needs and fulfil their dreams. These include Certificates (in Essential French and in Professional French) as well as Minor, BA, BA Honours, BA Combined Honours MA and PhD programs, and are the result of a committed endeavour of our faculty towards societal well-being. The students in the Department of French at McMaster will find themselves in a very stimulating environment where they feel cared for while being prepared as future bilingual professionals.

The diversity at the core of our Department exposes our students to various cultures from Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and the Caribbean. It is a travel through time, across the periods that are the landmarks of humanity’s intellectual evolution from the Middle Ages to the present. Students will discover various aspects of language, arts, culture, cinema and literature.

You can live and work in French in Hamilton, elsewhere in Ontario and throughout Canada and the world.

– Eugène Nshimiyimana, Former Chair, Department of French

The Department of French acknowledges that we meet on occupied land. McMaster University is located on the traditional territories of the Mississauga and Haudenosaunee nations, and within the lands protected by the “Dish with One Spoon” wampum agreement.

We embrace the principles of inclusivity in an attempt to create a brighter world.

Why Study French?

Mastering a second official language in a bilingual country is an asset in the job market. The median income of Francophones is higher than that of the general population (Profil statistique pour les Francophones en Ontario / Government of Ontario Statistical profile, 2005). French is a key that opens many doors in:

  • Business
  • Diplomacy
  • Engineering
  • Government
  • Health sciences and medicine
  • Humanitarian organizations
  • Immigration
  • Journalism
  • Law
  • Research
  • Teaching
  • Tourism
  • Translation and interpreting

The rewarding and fulfilling outcomes are endless!
